New Image Hair Clinic: Hair Loss in Women

Although men lose their hair at a younger age and often in more obvious ways than women do, hair loss is a condition that affects both genders. Hair loss in women occurs for more complex and varied reasons than it does in men. Still, when caught early, it can often be treated effectively.

In men, genetics coupled with DHT (dihydrotestosterone) play a major role in hair loss. A form of testosterone, DHT can also cause hair loss in women, although the chemical is less common in women and tends not to be the major contributing factor. As with men, however, hormonal changes play a dominant role. For instance, thyroid disorders form a major cause of hair loss in women, as do low estrogen levels. For this reason, many women experience thinning hair after menopause. In addition, hormonal changes following pregnancy sometimes lead to hair loss as well, although hair growth usually returns to normal within a few months.

Women may also lose hair due to deficiencies or extremes of certain vitamins and minerals. Low iron can lead to hair loss, even when symptoms of anemia are not present. High levels of vitamin A can also cause hair loss. Before supplementing, however, women should get tested by a physician. The best self-help approach involves eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and avoiding excessive alcohol intake.

New Image Hair Clinic Supports the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery

by New Image Hair Clinic

Committed to helping individuals regain both their hair and confidence in their appearance, New Image Hair Clinic offers extensively experienced hair restoration services for men and women. However, New Image Hair Clinic’s dedication to helping people struggling with hair loss does not stop with its own services. New Image Hair Clinic contributes to the advancement of hair restoration services by donating to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Founded in 1993, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is a not-for-profit volunteer organization comprising more than 700 hair restoration doctors. The organization strives to improve the science and aesthetics of hair restoration through fostering communication between and continuing education of licensed physicians. Hair loss treatment, hair replacement, hair transplant surgery, and medical hair restoration all fall under the organization’s umbrella of interests.

Members of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery have access to articles and information on the latest development in the field. At the Annual Scientific Meeting, physicians attend lectures, workshops, lunch symposiums, panel discussions, debates, and presentations by their peers. Hair restoration doctors interested in expanding their understanding of the field may enroll in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s Fellowship Training Program. For those interested in conducting research, the society offers grants for relevant clinical research up to $2,400. The Society currently offers a joint research grant in conjunction with the International Hair Research Foundation, amounting to $10,000.
